Attributes vs Identity

September 17, 2020

"I am the fastest person in this WHOLE class!"

-Adorable Child In My Dance Class

I teach a lot of kids and I hear this phase (and others like it) all the time. This is a child beginning the search for their identity. They are scanning their environment and looking for contrasting attributes to see what makes them different - what makes them unique.

But attributes are not enough to make up an identity; they simply describe the person who holds the identity.

A blue cup is a cup, that is blue.

A small dog is a dog, that is small.

Find you, the real you, then you can start to appreciate your attributes instead of depending on them.
