Me: "Yeah! I teach dance lessons! Here's my card."
Them: "Oh no. Seriously. No. I can't dance."
Me: "...That's what dance lessons are for..."
I have this interaction all the time but the problem is not with them. The problem is with us. Dance is a place; a state of freedom expressed through the body. We, dancers, have built walls around that place, claiming it as our own. For a "non-dancer" to say they don't dance is reasonable. They can tell they are not welcome. Everyone can.
If you have a friend who doesn't dance, introduce them to it! You don't have to bring them to your studio or drag them to a workshop. Throw a dance party at your house, dance in the car while you're driving somewhere. Show them that they can feel comfortable moving their bodies.
